“In her drawings, Chabannes primary focus is on extreme fusional relationships, situations of extensive dependency, which exhausts the sense of individuality. In her recent project “Individuation and Overlap” Chabannes uses existing paintings from Oskar Kokoschka with his lover, Alma Mahler, photographs of Marina Abramovic and Ulay while they closely perform, pictures of Genesis P orridge with Lady Jay attempting to resemble one another. The “Individuation and Overlap” Series follows a strict and systematic process. A map of the original picture is built upon numerous layers of tracing paper, the data is endlessly flipped over, transferred and overlapped on a wood panel until the borders of each of the protagonists fade away.
Chabannes focus here is also on the shape of her practice and its singular identity.
By intersecting, multiplying and overlapping images, Chabannes aims to recall the obsessive attempts to increase metaphoric and conceptual strength through the juxtaposition of ideas, pictures, references and the hope of a successful stable integration.”
